ふせる【伏せる】

1 〔下に向ける〕 turn over; turn down; lay sth face down; lay sth upside down.

●目を伏せる cast down one's eyes; look downward

・杯を伏せる turn over [invert] a (sake) cup (to show that one has finished drinking)

・本を伏せる lay a book face down (without shutting it)

・ひざの上に本を伏せる lay one's book face down(ward) in one's lap

・身を伏せる lie (face) down; throw oneself flat (on one's stomach); fall (prostrate); (物陰に) take cover; 〔平身低頭する〕 《文》 prostrate oneself

・地上に身を伏せる throw oneself (face down) on the ground; flatten oneself on the ground; throw oneself to the ground.
